Current U.S. physical activity guidance emphasizes regular aerobic activity together with muscle-strengthening work, and those targets can be reached through many activities that do not require high-impact training.

What Does Low-Impact Exercise Actually Mean?

In fitness, low impact generally refers to exercise that limits hard landings, jumping, and repeated jarring contact with the ground. Walking is a familiar example: one foot remains in contact with the ground during the normal walking gait rather than both feet leaving the ground as they do during running.

Cycling takes this idea further because your body weight is largely supported by the bicycle or stationary bike. Swimming and water exercise use buoyancy to reduce weight-bearing demands. Elliptical machines allow the feet to remain supported by the pedals throughout the movement.

But “low impact” does not mean “no load.”

Your muscles still produce force. Your joints still move. Your cardiovascular system can still work hard. Resistance training can be highly demanding without involving a single jump.

For most adults, current U.S. guidance recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent combination. Adults are also advised to perform muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days each week.

Those recommendations do not require running.

1. Build an aerobic base

Choose one or more activities you can repeat comfortably, such as:

Mistake 1: Assuming every workout has to be easy

Reducing impact does not remove your ability to train hard.

Mistake 2: Doing cardio but ignoring strength

What it cannot do automatically is prepare you for every possible physical demand.

If your goal is to become a better runner, you eventually need running-specific preparation. But general health and long-term fitness do not require every person to pursue the same activities.
